How to Remove Wax From a Carpet?

Whether you’re a candle person or a wax melts aficionado, accidents can happen. Hot wax can drop on your precious carpet and get stuck to it. Maybe you didn’t notice it at the time, or perhaps the wax was too hot to touch, but now it’s stuck to the carpet, and you’re probably wondering ‘how to remove wax from a carpet?’

Well, there’s an easy solution to get wax out from a carpet, regardless of the type of carpet or rug you have in your home. It’s a simple three to four-step solution with things you already have lying around in your home.

Things You Need

Here’s what you’re going to use:

  • Butter knife
  • Hand towel
  • Iron
  • Carpet cleaner (optional)

Step-by-Step Process of Removing Wax from Carpet

Follow these quick and easy instructions to get any kind of wax out of your carpet:

Scraping

First, take a butter knife (or even a fork) and scrape the hardened wax gently. Depending on how much wax you’ve dropped on it, you may be able to get some on the top just by scraping. However, make sure to be super gentle as some carpets, usually, the expensive ones, have delicate loops that can fray easily.

Keep in mind that this is not for and will not remove all the wax. It’s just to make the next step easier and remove any hardened wax that’s easily removable.

Once you’ve scraped, you can vacuum clean the spot to remove the bits and pieces of the wax you just scraped off. Alternatively, use a carpet brush to remove it off the carpet.

Ironing

Now, take the small hand towel and dampen it. It should just be wet, not drenching in water, so wring it well.

Fold the towel in half and place it over the wax.

Set the iron to the high setting and let it heat up (for this reason, it’s best to use a cotton towel as it can withstand high heat).

Place the iron over the towel that’s over the wax and let it sit for 10 seconds only.

The wax will melt and get stuck on the wet towel. Remove the iron and then the towel in a single forceful motion (just how you remove wax strips to remove hair).

If you didn’t get all the wax out on the first try, repeat this step, now folding the towel in the other direction. Or you could use a second one!

A Word of Caution: Make sure to fold the towel, so it’s two layers. That way, the heat from iron won’t damage the carpet. Also, don’t leave the iron for too long, as the heat may damage the carpet.

Cleaning

If the wax has left any marks on the carpet, you can now clean it with a carpet cleaner. Just spray a little on the spot and scrub it with an old toothbrush or spoon. Dab the spot with a clean wet towel and let the carpet air dry.

Bottomline

Don’t fret if you, your kid, your pet, or a clumsy guest dropped a candle or wax melt onto the carpet. Just follow this easy process to get it out of your carpet!
